Scorpion Tracker: S5 vs S5+ vs S7, Which One Do You Need?

Which Scorpion tracker does your car actually need, S7, S5 or S5+?

Most drivers assume it’s a straight upgrade path priced by feature count. It isn’t. On UK owner forums, the most common complaint isn’t about performance; it’s confusion over why two trackers that sound similar cost so much differently, with no obvious explanation on the product page. The real difference between the three tiers is Thatcham category, driver recognition and, on one tier only, built-in immobilisation, not simply how much you’re willing to spend.

At VMS Autocare, every insurance approved tracker we fit is built on the Scorpion platform, sold across three tiers, S7, S5 and S5+. All three are tested and certified by Thatcham Research, but they are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong tier can mean paying for protection you don’t need, or fitting a tracker your insurer won’t recognise for the discount you were promised. This guide breaks down what each tier actually offers, including the one feature that often gets left out of the comparison, so you can match the right tracker to your car and your policy.

Every tier here is, at its core, a stolen vehicle recovery tracker: if your car is taken, it feeds live GPS data to a monitoring centre, who work with the police to get it back. What changes between S7, S5 and S5+ is how early that alert is triggered, and, on the S5+ only, whether the vehicle can be stopped from starting in the first place. Understanding that distinction, not just the price tag, is what tells you which tier actually suits your car.

What “Thatcham Category” Actually Means for a Scorpion Tracker

Every Scorpion tracker is independently tested and certified by Thatcham Research, the UK’s vehicle security assessment body used by most major insurers. Thatcham Research call any alarm, immobiliser or tracker that passes their testing a Thatcham device, and that device is then graded into a category, which is what your insurer checks against your policy wording, not the tracker’s name. A Thatcham S5 tracker, whether that’s the Scorpion S5 or the S5+, meets the higher of the two categories covered in this guide; the Scorpion S7 sits in the separate, lower Thatcham Category S7. Some insurers specify a category outright (“must be Thatcham Category S5 or above”), while others simply ask for “an approved tracker” and leave the tier up to you. Getting this wrong is one of the most common, and avoidable, reasons drivers find out too late that their tracker doesn’t qualify for a premium reduction.

Scorpion S7: The Straightforward Starting Point

The Scorpion S7 is the entry tier in the range and the most affordable of the three. It’s a stolen vehicle recovery tracker in the truest sense: if the car moves without authorisation, the system alerts a 24/7 monitoring centre, which works with the police to locate and recover the vehicle using live GPS data. There’s no driver recognition built in, which keeps installation simpler and the ongoing subscription cheaper.

For everyday cars, especially those that aren’t flagged as high-theft-risk models, an S7 car tracker is often perfectly sufficient. It satisfies the baseline “insurance approved tracker” requirement that many standard policies ask for, without paying extra for features a lower-risk vehicle doesn’t need.

Scorpion S5: Built-In Driver Recognition

Step up to the Scorpion S5 and you gain Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR). The system pairs with a small tag, fob or card carried by authorised drivers. If the vehicle is driven without that tag present, whether that’s a family member borrowing the car unexpectedly or a thief who’s got past the locks, the monitoring centre is alerted immediately, even before the car has technically been “stolen” in the traditional sense.

This extra layer is exactly what pushes many insurance policies, and higher-value or higher-risk vehicles, to require Category S5 specifically. If your car sits in a bracket insurers consider more attractive to thieves, or your policy names S5 as the minimum, an S5 car tracker is the tier to fit. It costs more than the S7, both upfront and on subscription, and the added detection speed is the trade-off.

Scorpion S5+: The Only Tier With Built-In Immobilisation

The Scorpion S5+ carries everything the standard S5 offers, including full Automatic Driver Recognition, and adds one thing the S5 doesn’t have: immobilisation. Two distinct features sit on top of the standard S5 tracking. Automatic Immobilisation stops the vehicle starting unless your ADR tag is present, and Remote Immobilisation lets our monitoring centre immobilise the vehicle once a theft is confirmed. Both are genuinely useful, but neither is itself Thatcham-certified. Thatcham removed immobilisation from its tracker testing criteria back in 2019, so the S5+ carries the same Thatcham Category S5 approval as the standard S5. Its immobilisation sits alongside that certification as an added layer of protection, not as a higher Thatcham category.

If you’re comparing trackers purely on “which one does the most”, the S5+ is the answer, largely because of this immobilisation feature rather than any jump in Thatcham category. Whether it’s worth the step up depends on how much you value stopping a theft before it starts, rather than only recovering the car afterwards, since a standard S5 already meets most insurers’ top requirement on its own.

Which Thatcham Approved Tracker Does Your Insurer Actually Require?

Confirming what your insurer means by an approved car insurance tracker is the step most drivers skip, and it’s the one that matters most. Before choosing between the Scorpion S5, S5+ or S7, check your policy documents or call your insurer directly and ask two things: does it specify a Thatcham category, and if so, which one. Some insurers are explicit (“Thatcham Category S5 tracker required”), others simply want confirmation of “an approved tracker” without naming a tier.

If your policy is silent on category, the S7 will usually satisfy a standard insurance approved tracker clause and keep costs down. If your insurer names S5 or higher, fitting an S7 won’t get you the discount you’re expecting, however good the system is technically. It’s a five-minute phone call that can save you from paying for the wrong tier entirely.

How VMS Autocare Bundles Each Scorpion Tracker

We build our security packages around this exact decision, so you’re not left guessing which tier to add to your basket. Our Entry Series pairs a Scorpion S7 tracker with a Road Angel Halo Start 2, giving lower-risk vehicles a solid, affordable starting point. The Advanced Security bundle steps up to a Scorpion S5 tracker alongside a CAN-PHANTOM immobiliser, suited to cars that sit in a higher insurance bracket. For vehicles that need the most comprehensive protection available, our Maximum Protection and Full Coverage Elite bundles both include the Scorpion S5+ tracker paired with immobiliser protection, giving your vehicle tracking, driver recognition and immobilisation together; the Elite package adds a Road Angel Halo Ultima dash cam as well. We also offer additional tracker and immobiliser combinations beyond these four, so if none of the above matches your car exactly, get in touch and our team can talk you through the full range.

Every one of these combinations uses the same underlying Scorpion tracker platform, so the decision isn’t about quality. It’s about matching the Thatcham category, and where relevant the immobilisation, to your car and your cover.

Which Scorpion Tracker Should You Choose?

There’s no single “best” Scorpion tracker. The S7 is the right call for a huge number of everyday cars and standard policies. The S5 earns its higher price with driver recognition for vehicles that genuinely need faster theft detection. The S5+ is reserved for drivers who want built-in immobilisation as well as tracking, on top of the same Thatcham category the standard S5 already holds. The honest starting point isn’t the spec sheet, it’s your insurance policy and your vehicle’s risk profile. Get that right first, and the choice between S5, S5+ and S7 becomes straightforward.

If you’re still unsure which Scorpion tracker your car needs, our team at VMS Autocare can check your policy wording and vehicle risk category with you before you buy, so you fit the right tier once rather than upgrading later. We’d also recommend browsing our full range of insurance approved trackers to see how each Scorpion tier is bundled before you commit to a package.

FAQs

Q: Is a Scorpion S5 tracker better than an S7?

A: Not automatically. The Scorpion S5 tracker adds Automatic Driver Recognition, while the Scorpion S7 tracker suits lower-risk vehicles and standard insurance policies just as well, at a lower cost.

Q: Is the Scorpion S5 tracker any good?

A: Yes. The Scorpion S5 tracker is Thatcham approved, insurer-recognised, and adds driver recognition beyond the baseline Scorpion S7.

Q: What’s the difference between S5 and S5+?

A: The Scorpion S5 and S5+ trackers share the same Thatcham Category S5 approval. The S5+ adds built-in immobilisation, Automatic Immobilisation via your ADR tag, and Remote Immobilisation from the monitoring centre, on top of the tracking and driver recognition both tiers include.

Q: Which Thatcham category tracker should I choose?

A: Check your insurance policy first: it states the required Thatcham category, usually S5 or S7. The Scorpion S5+ carries the same Category S5 approval as the S5, with immobilisation added on top.

Q: Does a cheaper S7 tracker still qualify for insurance discounts?

A: Often, yes. Many insurers only require an approved tracker without specifying a category, so a Scorpion S7 tracker can still qualify.

Q: How much dearer is an S5 tracker than an S7?

A: The Scorpion S5 costs more than the S7, both upfront and on subscription, reflecting its added Automatic Driver Recognition feature.

Q: Does the Scorpion S5+ tracker’s immobiliser have its own Thatcham certification?

A: No. Thatcham removed immobilisation from its tracker testing criteria in 2019. The S5+’s immobilisation features sit alongside its Thatcham Category S5 tracker certification rather than being separately certified.
